An Anchor of Calm in Europe: Letizia Moratti
Letizia Moratti is an Anchor of Political Calm for Europe
I first spent time in Milan in the fall of 2018.
As you know, Italy is a global tourist-mecca and each city is a jewel, the most spectacular of which like Venice, Rome or Florence were spared the bombs of WWII.
Milan, in contrast, was devastated by American bombs. This created a city different from any other in Italy.
Milan is a unique combination of typical ancient Italian architectural glory; depressive 1970’s cement block buildings; and bright bursting contemporary glass and soaring construction mixed together.
The city is uniquely creative in that it is the only “working” city in Italy.
The result is that the best in the world from Tokyo, Moscow, London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Buenos Aires and more all come and look to Milan for the best in global design.
Furthering Milan’s boom is the upcoming Winter Olympics in 2026 and Brexit which has moved investment from London to Milan, along with Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam.
In spending time here the I met the former mayor Letizia Moratti.
“La Moratti” (as she would be called in Italian) is the former head of the national television company and positions herself as a center-right problem solver in the spirit of Mike Bloomberg’s tenure as Mayor of New York.
She is up for election as a candidate for President of Lombardy Sunday, February 12 and regardless of the outcome it is clear she will be a force in Western politics as a Mayor, Governor or Prime Minister.
I say this because I believe central Europe which includes southern Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Northern Italy represent a calm anchor of moderation in a political world full of extremes.
La Moratti has demonstrated her executive ability in private and public sectors and I believe she will be a balancing voice of calm at a time when the stress of the moment most needs it.
